If Sam communicated the buffer aloud first, this is a nothingburger. If not, that is on Sam.
Rename the tradition: “soft start at 8:10” so nobody loses face. Spoilers for romance movies are genuinely painful though.
Sam should not unilaterally decide buffer policy, but if this is the fifth late night in a row, I get the frustration too.
Starting without your partner for a shared movie night is a small act that signals “my schedule beats ours.” Pause culture exists for a reason.
